The rise of crown price Mohammed bin Salman was no doubt a coup. His nephew Mohammed bin Nayef is seemingly locked away and 81-year-old King Salman is seemingly a figurehead.
The consolidation of power is continuing. The WSJ reports that a security crackdown is ongoing and at least 40 people were rounded up this week, including clerics, prominent scholars, political commentators and members of the royal family.
"The group that was detained has been engaged in intelligence activities and has contacts with foreign entities, including the Muslim Brotherhood," a senior Saudi official quoted by the WSJ said.
